This body of work offers an intimate exploration of the Silva family, whose multi-generational experience with piebaldism provides a profound story on identity, resilience, and the evolving perceptions of physical difference. Rooted in the story of Samuel Silva, a dynamic young figure in the fashion world, the project traces the family’s journey from concealment to confident self-expression. It seeks to challenge societal constructs of beauty and foster deeper understanding of this rare genetic condition.
Piebaldism, characterised by distinctive depigmented patches of skin and hair, has long been misunderstood, often subjecting individuals to stigma and alienation. The Silva family’s history reveals this tension between visibility and acceptance. Dona Dionisia, spent much of her life in retreat, hiding her unique features to evade prejudice. In contrast, her grandson Samuel boldly inhabits public spaces as a model whose career thrives on his striking appearance, redefining beauty in an industry historically limited by conventional standards.
The project intertwines personal stories with broader cultural themes. Samuel’s mother, Nivianei, and younger relatives embody a generational shift — from internalised shame to outward celebration. Through visual storytelling, their experiences reflect a broader movement toward inclusivity and the reclamation of narrative by those living with visible differences. By extending this inquiry across borders, the photographer aims to illuminate the shared struggles and triumphs of people living with skin conditions globally. The ultimate goal is to foster a deeper societal awareness and broaden the discourse around diversity, visibility, and human worth.
In Samuel's words:
‘Being part of a three-generation family with piebaldism has profoundly shaped my sense of self. From an early age, I grew up seeing my condition as something that connected us in a unique way. My family taught me to embrace my uniqueness with pride, showing me that piebaldism is not just a physical characteristic, but an important part of who we are. This legacy has given me the strength to face the world with confidence and made me more aware of the importance of celebrating diversity.
My family plays a vital role in supporting and advocating for people with piebaldism. They have always been a source of encouragement and inspiration, showing that true beauty comes from within. In our circle, we share stories, offer emotional support, and help educate others about the condition. Together, we strive to normalise piebaldism, using our experience to empower other families and create a more welcoming environment.
Representing my family’s legacy and the piebaldism community on a global level is a great honour. For me, it means carrying a message of acceptance, pride, and resilience, not only for my family, but for everyone who feels different or marginalised. I want to be a symbol of strength and unity, showing that our differences can connect us and inspire positive change.
My mission is to leave a lasting impact by promoting inclusion and helping to build a world where everyone feels seen and valued. I can’t forget to mention my mother, who, with her piebaldism, is the guiding light for my journey. She taught me that our brands are symbols of strength and beauty, which we carry with pride. Her love and resilience are my foundation, showing that together, we can transform differences into power and inspire the world to embrace diversity’
